What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough quality tears or when your tear film evaporates too quickly, often disrupting your daily life. It’s not just about discomfort—untreated dry eye can lead to further eye issues.

Understanding Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Your tear film consists of 3 layers

  • The oily outer layer
  • The watery middle layer
  • The inner mucous layer

When the glands that produce these elements of your tears are not functioning properly or become inflamed, dry eye can occur. Inflammation can also occur from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

MGD is a common condition that affects the function of the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oil layer of the tear film. When these glands become clogged or inflamed, they can’t produce enough oil to keep the tears from evaporating too quickly, leading to dry eye.

Common Symptoms of Dry Eye

If you’re experiencing any of these common signs or symptoms, you might be dealing with dry eye:

  • A gritty, sandy, or stinging sensation in the eyes
  • Redness or irritation
  • Blurry vision
  • Watery eyes (in an attempt to overcompensate)
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses

InflammaDry for Dry Eye Diagnostics

The first step in getting relief from dry eye is the diagnostic stage. At Joshua Powell MD, we use InflammaDry, a quick test that detects inflammation in the eye, a key factor in dry eye symptoms. By measuring MMP-9, a protein linked to inflammation, this test helps us understand the underlying cause of your discomfort.

InflammaDry helps us create a more targeted treatment plan, addressing your specific needs and providing more effective relief.

Treating Dry Eye at Joshua Powell MD

Dry eye disease can affect anyone, regardless of age, sex, or race. However, certain factors can increase the risk of developing this condition, including:

  • Spending more time using digital screens
  • Wearing contact lenses without proper care
  • Using eye makeup daily

Following the diagnostic stage, during which Dr. Powell can determine the cause of your dry eye symptoms, our team will work with you to find a treatment option that suits your needs. nflamed, they can’t produce enough oil to keep the tears from evaporating too quickly, leading to dry eye.

OptiLIGHT by Lumenis is a light-based, noninvasive treatment done in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. The first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management.

The treatment is safe, gentle, and is backed by more than 20 clinical studies.

OptiLIGHT uses precise pulses of light to reduce the inflammation that is typically associated with dry eye disease, improve tear break-up time, and increase meibomian gland functionality.

Learn More About OptiLIGHT

Dry eye caused by MGD often results from blocked oil glands in the eyelids, preventing a healthy tear film from forming. iLux is a specialized device that delivers gentle heat and compression directly to the eyelids, helping to unblock the meibomian glands and restore oil flow.

This treatment improves tear stability, reducing irritation, redness, and discomfort.

For patients who struggle with tear evaporation or insufficient tear volume, punctal plugs can offer a simple but effective solution. These tiny, dissolvable inserts are placed in the tear ducts to slow tear drainage, helping your natural tears stay on the eye longer.

This increased moisture provides lasting hydration, helping to reduce irritation and dryness.
